A decision to raise $14,000,000 in the United States in 1944 for the United Palestine Appeal was adopted here today at an all-day session of the National Council for Palestine, attended by 3,000 delegates from various parts of the country, Rabbi James G. Heller has been elected national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal to succeed Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, it was announced at the session.
Deputy Prime Minister Jan Masaryk of the Czechoslovak Government-in-Exile, told the delegates that the Jewish question is one of the most important once “which we must solve and settle” once this war is over. “To blame the blunders of a great majority on a small and helpless minority,” he added, “is cowardly, indecent and rotten. For twenty years I have followed closely and interestedly the wonderful work the Jews are doing in Palestine. During the war I have heard from quarters often not at all Zionistic, of the great war effort and the substantial and lasting contribution of the Palestine Jews in speeding up the war and bringing nearer the day of victory and deliverance.” Other speakers included Senator Alben W. Barkley. of Kentucky Nathan Straus, Dr. Israel Goldstein, Judge Morris Rothenberg, Nathaniel L. Goldstein and Bernard A. Rosenblatt.
In addition to Rabbi James G. Heller as national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, other officers for the fund-raising organization were announced yesterday as follows: Stephen S. Wise, chairman of the administrative committee; Louis Lipsky, chairman of the executive committee, and Edmund I. Kaufmann, Israel Goldstein, Louis E. Levinthal, Bernard A. Rosenblatt, Morris Rothenberg. Abba Hillel Silver, Robert Szold, co-chairmen. Charles J. Rosenbloom was re-named national treasurers, and Abraham Goodman, Abraham L. Liebovitz and Jacob Sincoff, associate treasurers. The national vice chairmen are, Barnett R. Brickner, Irving Miller, Harry A. Pine, Charles Ress. B. G. Rudolph, Elihu D. Stone, Joe Weingarten and Herman L. Weisman.
