The American Jewish Conference today announced that its forthcoming sessions, which will take place in September in Chicago, a delegation will be chosen to act for the Conference in the eventual peace negotiations. The delegation will be given responsibilities in order that the Conference may be prepared in time to exercise a direct influence at the peace table.
Announcement to this effect was made by Louis Lipsky in his capacity as chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Conference. The announcement added that “the Conference left many things undone and unconsidered, but what was obscure in September 1943, however, will be much clearer in September 1944.”
“The past ten months,” the statement said, “have revealed not only an abnormal growth of parallel authorities and agencies in American Jewish life, but the development of rivalries and cross currents that have shocked and distressed the community; mutuality and coordination among the affiliated organizations, which had to be adjusted if the Conference was to fulfill its purposes, was not achieved in any adequate measure. This problem deserves special attention.”
The statement pointed out that the first session of the Conference adopted a comprehensive post-war European program. “But since then, the outer circumstances have greatly changed and there is required a program of action based on the new realities, more definite and more dynamic. The specific demands of the Jewish people with regard to status and reparations are due for direct representation to the United Nations,” the statement declared.
