The Mexican Committee Against Racial Discrimination protested today against the showing of a play by Two Pelay called “The Jew” on grounds that “its content is anti-Semitic and therefore discriminatory.”
The Committee president, poet Enrique Gonzalez Martinez, wrote to Javier Rojo Gomez, Regent of the Federal District who controls theatres, complaining that the play “violates the democratic spirit of the Mexican people and its genuine and justified feeling against race discrimination.” The Committee asked that the play be closed down, The Ideal Theatre where the play is showing advertises itself as the Home of laughter “Ja: Ja:” and describes “The Jew” as “the most discussed comedy of the year.” It announced today that the play will close “in the ordinary course of events” on May 27.
