The sum of approximately 3,000,000,000 lei was spent by the Joint Distribution Committee for Jewish relief in Rumania during the last six months, it was announced here at a press conference addressed by Robert Pilpel, overseas representative of the J.D.C. who just returned to this country.
More than 70,000,000 pengoes were spent by the J.D.C. for relief for Jews in Hungary during the same period, he said. Approximately 35,000,000 francs were spent by the J.D.C. for Jewish relief in France during the month of January alone. All these sums run into millions of dollars, it was emphasized at the conference.
Mr. Pilpel reported that the surviving Jews of Europe are showing “an amazing resiliency in maintaining their community organizations and in making tremendous efforts to help themselves.”
