The war’s most vicious small-scale actions are now taking place on this front with units of the Jewish Brigade tackling clements of the Nazis’ fanatical Fourth Paratroop Division.
In one of these fights the Brigade’s patrols infiltrated deep into enemy positions during the night and fought hand-to-hand battles along the flood banks, forcing the Germans from their positions. The Nazis rained mortar fire upon the Jewish troops, but their counter-attacks were repulsed.
The Brigade troops participated in the general advance across the Senio river. They crossed this formidable barrier despite heavy minefields. An examination of German positions they over-ran has disclosed that their artillery is extremely effective.
As of several days ago, the Jewish Brigado had lost only one prisoner since they have been in action. He was a first-aid man who accompanied a patrol into the German lines, and remained when the patrol withdrew to care for a wounded comrade. When the Brigade advanced next day, they found that the wounded man had died and the first-aid man had disappeared, and, presumably, been captured.
