Zionism is on the increase among Algerian Jews, and previous assimilationist tendencies are on the down-grade, Robert Montage, French specialist in Islamic matters, and former head of the French Institute at Damascus, said today. Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Montage confirmed that the recent disturbances in French North Africa were singularly free of anti-Jewish incidents.

A large General Zionist mass meeting held here last night to mark the 41st anniversary of the death of Theodor Herzl, heard Andre Blumel, Socialist leader, demand that the gates of Palestine be kept open for free Jewish immigration. Mr. Blumel stressed the growing solidarity of French Jews. Guest speakers included U.S. Army chaplains Racowsky and Schubow.

A group of 150 Jews, the first contingent of 1,600 who are expected to leave France for Palestine within the next week, entrained for Marseille today.
