The heroism and the work of the Jewish chaplains in the U.S. armed forces are lauded in messages issued by Gen. H.H. Arnold, Commanding General of the Army Air Force, Admiral Ernest King, and Gen. Brehon Somerwell, head of the Army Service Forces.
Gen. Arnold expresses “deep appreciation for the splendid work the Jewish chaplains are doing at home, abroad, and in the far flung combat zones the world over.” General Somerwell emphasizes that the chaplains “have a heroic record wherever our men work and fight.” Admiral King stresses the fact-that the chaplains played a most important role in maintaining morale among the servicemen and that many of them worked sometimes “under the most severe difficulties.”
The messages were issued in connection with the annual dinner which the Jewish Theological Seminary is arranging for next month to honor the 100 graduates of the Seminary and members of the Rabbinical Assembly of America serving as chaplains.
