A three-day conference on Judaism and American Democracy, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Hebrew Union College, concluded here today with a declaration emphasizing that the salvation of the world depends upon the mobilization of special moral and spiritual resources.

The declaration, which was unanimously adopted by the delegates, summarized the principal ideas that had been promulgated at the conference, and called for an immediate resurgence of the vital spiritual forces which are to be found in the historic traditions, embodied in both Judaism and American democracy. The declaration called for the greater extension of democracy and stated:

“We declare that political democracy must be reinforced by economic democracy, that equality before the law is inadequate, without the guarantee of economic security. We are confident that our democracy, which succeeded in mobilizing the spiritual and technological resources to fight and to win a global war, has within it the genius to feed, house and educate all its people.”
