State Department is Asked to Investigate Causes of Tripolitania Pogroms

Download PDF for this date

The State Department was asked today to secure the appointment of an impartial commission to investigate the causes of the recent pogroms is Tripolitania which resulted in the death of 100 Jews.

The request was made by the World Jewish Congress, following the receipt of a cablegram from the organized Jewish Community of Tripolitania yesterday which puts the responsibility squarely upon the shoulders of the local military governmental authorities, charging them with inefficiency for permitting the massacre to continue for more than 48 hours in spite of constant demands for prompt protection.

“We protest,” says the Jewish community of Tripolitania in its cablegram, ‘against inefficiency to use promptly the necessary measures needed to stop and suppress the riots. We demand that steps be taken immediately to insure the security of the population by armed British European troops to prevent a possible recurrence of the riots and to punish all persons guilty of murder, looting and inefficiency. We therefore ask for an impartial commission to be sent to make a thorough investigation of the events so as to establish real and lasting security and restore secular friendship with the Tripolitanian Arabs.”
