Official British quarters today told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the British Government will not make its future actions with regard to admission of Jewish immigrants to Palestine dependent on whether the Arabs in Palestine agree.
Foreign Secretary Bevin, these quarters explained, did not make Jewish immigration dependent upon Arab consent, but upon previous consultation with the Arabs. Such consultation, they revealed, is still going on. While the Government would welcome Arab agreement, it will act even if no agreement is reached, they said.
Pointing out that Jewish immigration to Palestine has never ceased, the official quarters claimed that Jews are still entering Palestine at the rate of 1,500 a mouth, under the White Paper quota. About 400 Jews entered the country during November, while the figures for December are not yet available, they stated, adding that those entering the country “illegally” are deducted from the quota.
