Sentences ranging from life imprisonment at forced labor to five years were imposed today on 17 Rumanian officers found guilty of deporting and murdering Bessarabian Jews. The property of all the defendants was ordered confiscated.
Gen. Voiculescu, former governor of Bessarabia, received the stiffest sentence, forced labor for life. Col. Meculescu, Inspector of the Military Police, was sentenced to 15 years in solitary confinement. Nine officers who personally executed Jews were sentenced to life imprisonment, two received 15-year sentences, and two were sentenced to ten years each and two to five years.
