Groups Represented at London Jewish Parley Will Cooperate, but Plan No International Body

Jewish communities and organizations from 13 countries, represented at the conference here called by the Anglo-Jewish Association and the American Jewish Committee, will consult with each other on major post-war Jewish problems, but do not propose to establish any “international Jewish super body claiming to speak in the name of the individual Jewish communities in the various countries,” it is announced last night at a reception marking the conclusion of the meeting.

The announcement was made by a member of the American Jewish Committee delegation, Alan M. Strook who presented a report on the proceedings of a series of meetings held during the week. His report declared that the question of the Jewish position in the world was not a question for Jews alone, but was of the greatest importance for every right thinking human. Jacob Blaustein, head of the American delegation, said that a wide area of agreement had been reached at the conference, and appealed for continued cooperation to insure for Jews throughout the world “a life of dignity, security and peace.”

A supplement to the program committee report stressed that the most serious immediate problem facing Jewish groups is the situation of the displaced persons in Austria and Germany. It pointed out that the only solution to their problem is immediate evacuation and resettlement in the countries to which the DP’s desire to go, the report urged that Jewish organizations continue their affords to secure the immediate admission of DP’s to Palestine, and intervene with members of the UNO and other countries of possible immigration to guarantee that a policy of non-discrimination will a applied in admitting immigrants.

Dr. Philip Auerbach, president of the Union of Jewish Communities in the Nineland and Westphalia, in the British zone, charged that under the British military government Jews are being treated as enemy nationals and Jewish property is subject to requisition, in the same manner as German property. He declared the problem of restitution must be tackled immediately, and said that the situation of the German Jews is “terrible” and they require immediate aid from Jews in the United States and Britain.

Other speakers included Leonard Stein, president of the Anglo-Jewish Association; Jules Braunschweig of the Alliance Israelite Universally J.D. Efron of Argentina; Dr. Joseph Rosenzaft, representing the displaced Jews in the British zone; and others.
