The Union of American Hebrew Congregations “must boldly and forthrightly disassociate itself from dogmatic anti-Zionism,” Dr. Maurice N. Eisendrath, director of the organization, said today, in his biennial report to the more than 1,200 delegates from 329 congregations, 403 sisterhoods and 141 brotherhoods attending the 39th biennial council of the Union, which opened here today at the Hotel Netherlands Plaza.
Dr. Eisendrath asked the council to support the stand of the UABC executive board, which has voted to continue as an active member of the American Jewish Conference. He pointed out that while the UABC did not endorse the conference’s resolution on Palestine, which calls for a Jewish state, he felt that it was imperative that the UABC do not withdraw from the conference, but rather continue to cooperate with the other Jewish groups adhering to it. He also recommended the ultimate merger of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York.
In a message to the council, President Truman declared that “the real strength of any nation lies in its spiritual ideals,” and expressed the hope “that the meetings of the council will be helpful in interpreting to the world in modern terms the ancient teachings of Israel.”
