The arrival this week of three ships carrying visaless Jewish immigrants overshadowed all other events. Only two of the ships were intercepted by the British, while the third, carrying 1,000 passengers, succeeded in evading British naval patrols.
The 1,000 immigrants landed on the coast near Tel Aviv and “disappeared” while the Jewish resistance movement engaged the police in other sections of the city in order to divert attention from the landing. In the course of the clashes a Jewish girl was killed and another Jew was wounded. Both were members of a resistance group. Thirty Jews were arrested, but 26 of them have already been released.
The captain of “Tel Hai,” one of the captured vessels, on which 75 refugees arrived, was arrested by the British authorities together with his crew of ten. Among the “Tel Hai” passengers were 280 women.
