Canadian Cabinet Committee Studying Admission of European Refugees

A special cabinet committee is studying the question of admitting European refugees to Canada, it was disclosed in Parliament by Prime Minister Mackenzie King.

The premier described the matter as “about the most difficult problem with which any administration is faced at the present time” and added: “Up to now the Dominion had not been able to admit any large number but as the situation in the world changes we hope to take a more liberal attitude than it has been possible to take in the past.”

Agriculture Minister James Gardiner is known to be a proponent of a more liberal immigration policy, but strong opposition is expected from the province of Quebec.
