The appointment of Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein as advisor on Jewish Affairs to General Joseph T. McNarney, commander of U.S. forces in Europe, was favorably received here by representatives of various Jewish voluntary relief agencies and Jewish chaplains.

Nearly all officials agreed that it was necessary for the welfare of the displaced Jews that there be somebody to carry their case to the highest authority. A number of them asserted that much of the recent trouble between Jewish DP’s and U.S. troops probably would have been avoided had there been a Jewish advisor during the period after Judge Simon H. Rifkind’s return to the United States.
