A total of 449 steamers carrying 7,330 Jewish passengers were met by the Immigrant Reception and Pier Service of the HIAS during the first six months of 1946, according to the semi-annual report of the organization made public today by Abraham Herman, president. Some of the arrivals were routed to various parts of the country while others were cared for in the HIAS shelter.
During the six months period, the HIAS Location Service made successful locations of 12,822 relatives in Europe on behalf of American Jews, and located 11,950 Jews in the United States in answer to inquiries from their relatives abroad, Mr. Herman said. To keep abreast of increased immigration possibilities, HIAS has opened several new European offices, he added.
