The British Cabinet is expected to meet next week to discuss the Palestine question, it was reported today in reliable quarters, Prime Minister Attlee will probably fly back to London to attend.
The principal topics of discussion, it was said, would be the American attitude on the Palestine plan announced in the House of Commons on Wednesday, which it is hoped will be known by then, and former Prime Minister Churchill’s demand that the Palestine mandate be surrendered to the United Nations if America refuses to go along with the British scheme.
The British press today is almost unanimous in agreeing that the future of Palestine is dependent to a great extent on whether America will cooperate in solving the problem Many papers support Mr. Churchill’s contention that Britain should shift some of the burden to the U.S.
It was announced tonight that Syria and Lebanon have accepted invitations to attend the round-table conference on Palestine, bringing to four the number of acceptances already received. Saudi Arabia and Transjordan accepted earlier. It is understood that some of these states have indicated that they do not wish to meet jointly with Jewish representatives, and, therefore, separate sessions will probably be held. There is still no information as to which Jewish organizations are to be invited.
