Another 1,400 visaless Jews were aboard small vessels in Haifa harbor today awaiting deportation to Cyprus, as tension in the city remained high, following a clash last night with police and troops in which several Jews were injured. Meanwhile, two more immigrant ships were reported nearing Palestine.
Troops reinforcements have been sent to the dock area as a precaution against further outbreaks when the new deportations begin. The potential deportees are 600 aboard the Katriel Yaffe, which arrived on Tuesday and 800, including 40 pregnant women, on the Caf Gimmel, which came into port today. Jewish Agency representatives have not been allowed to contact them.
Continuing their war of nerves, resistance forces today called up several government buildings in Jerusalem and warned that they would be bombed. For the second time in two days the general post office building here was evacuated, as was the municipal building and Barclay’s Bank. After a search by police and troops the three buildings were declared safe. The false warnings were given despite a censorship on domestic telephone messages.
Ten of the fifteen refugees who were hospitalized on Tuesday after battling British troops who attempted to transfer them from the Henrietta Szold to the deportation ships, have been brought to the harbor area for inclusion among the next transport of deportees.
