Gen. Joseph T. McNarney, U.S. Commander in Europe, accompanied by Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, his advisor on Jewish Affairs, today flew to Italy presumably to discuss with Italian authorities the plan for providing shelter for 25,000 displaced Jews whom the American Government wishes to settle temporarily in Italy under UNRRA care.
Meanwhile, it was revealed here today that 15 to 20 percent of the more than 30,000 Jews infiltrating the American zone monthly are unaccompanied children. The children, who are taken to a special camp at Rosenheim, 40 miles from Munich, are not always orphans. It has been established that often the parents send the children ahead to safety, while they conclude their personal business and follow later. The children at the Rosenheim camp are listed by a special system that facilitates their being found by their parents.
It was reported today that the UNRRA has rescinded an order by British Lt. Gen. Sir Frederick Morgan, dismissed chief of UNRRA operations in Europe, which forbade the voluntary agencies from recruiting additional welfare workers to augment their services.
