Members of the Jewish Agency executive were scheduled to meet late this afternoon with Colonial Secretary George Hall presumably for the purpose of presenting him with the Agency’s latest terms for participation in the conference on Palestine.
Authoritative British sources today reported that “no new basis for Jewish attendance was worked out when Dr. Nahum Goldmann saw Bevin last Saturday, but both parties appear confident that previous difficulties can be by-passed.”
Reuter reported today that all indications point to the fact that the Jewish Agency and the British Government “will cut through the formal negotiations over the basis of Jewish participation in the conference by agreeing simply that Jewish delegates should come to the parley to argue the case for partition.” The report added that the “British policy remains based on the plan for provincial autonomy for Pales- tine within the Mandate, while the Jews, if they attend the conference, are prepared to explain that in supporting partition, they have already made their last concession.”
Reports last night that South African Premier Field Marshal Jan C. Smuts had conferred with Dr. Chaim Weizmann on the question of Jewish participation in the conference were confirmed today. Jewish Agency officials refused to comment on the meeting.
