Five-hundred Jewish DP teachers who have been on strike since Nov. 20 returned to work today following an agreement granting them food allowances given workers in the “No. 1” category.
UNRRA and Central Jewish Committee representatives pointed out that it was official policy to treat teachers the same as all other workers, but due to misunderstandings in several of the newer camps they were not receiving adequate supplies and allowances.
A Polish restitution mission in Frankfurt has announced that 160 sewing machines originally owned by Jews in Warsaw have been recovered in Bremen and will be returned to Warsaw where the ORT can use them in schools. The announcement said the machines were originally confiscated by Nazis for use by Warsaw Jews in making Wehrmacht uniforms.
