Because of the severe drought which has afflicted Rumania for the last two years, the first relief needs of Rumanian Jewry are large-scale food shipments, Joseph Schwartz, European director of the Joint Distribution Committee, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency during an interview at which he revealed that the J.D.C. has increased the number of canteens it supports in an attempt to ameliorate the condition of Jews and non-Jews in the interior of the country.
He also disclosed that the J.D.C. will widen its activities by including on its advisory committees new members recommended by the Federation of Rumanian Jewish Communities in order to give representation to all sections of the Jewish community. He reported that his organization has opened 29 credit cooperatives to help the economic rehabilitation of 21,000 Jewish families and that together with other Jewish groups has repaired or founded religious schools, synagogues and cemeteries. It has also undertaken a new relief program for 8,000 children and 2,500 youths.
