Only resettlement in Palestine can solve the problem of the 150,000 to 200,000 Jews in Germany and Austria, Gen. Joseph T. McNarney, former commander of U.S. Forces in the European Theater yesterday told Herbert Hoover, the General revealed today.
He said that he informed Mr. Hoover, who is in Germany on an economic mission for President Truman, that 95 percent of the displaced Jews wish to go to Palestine, and in view of their determination, the only way to settle the Jewish problem is to allow them to immigrate there.
(In London, Jewish Agency leaders expressed gratification at Gen. McNarney’s statement, welcoming it as a “realistic recognition of the situation.” Arab spokesman countered with the suggestion that the displaced Jews be allowed to settle in the United States.)
