In a dramatic move, made under the shadow of imminent military rule, Jewish settlers last night established three new settlements in the Negev, bringing to 18 the number of colonies which have been set up within the last few months in the barren desert area.
Announcing the establishment of the settlements, which are on Jewish National Fund land, a Jewish Agency spokesman said that the building of new communities and the immigration of refugees “are the essence of Zionism.”
The first settlement to be founded by Betar, the Revisionist youth organization, was formally dedicated near Benjamina yesterday. Named Naclath Jabotinsky, in honor of the late Revisionist leader, the colony will be devoted to truck farming. It is on 250 acres of land owned by the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association.
The Alice Seligsberg Trade School, founded by the Hadassah as part of the Louis Brandeis Vocational Center.held its first graduation exercises, conferring diplomas on 40 girls. The graduates will take positions as office workers , seamstresses, restaurant managers and in other fields. The Brandeis Center aims at meeting the need of the community for skilled labor.
The Jewish National Fund announced, however, that planting of the Wingate Forest, scheduled for Monday, has been postponed.
