The dispute over Jewish immigration into Australia, which has been fanned by anti-Semitic newspapers and veterans organizations, was aired in Parliament this week on three successive days.

Minister of Immigration Arthur A. Calwell was attacked by John Lang, who has spearheaded anti-Jewish campaigns in Parliament. Lang cited the names of three Jewish immigrants and asked an inquiry into how they received visas.

Meanwhile, the Ex-Servicemen’s Legion issued a statement supporting Calwell and disputing the claim of the rival Returned Servicemen’s League that the Ministry of Immigration had assigned a disproportionate number of visas to displaced Jews. The head of the League, S.B. Millhouse, who was invited to inspect Calwell’s files, after he had charged that too many Jews were being admitted, refused comment after he had inspected the figures.
