Strong criticism of the government’s immigration policy was again voiced in Parliament by Col. David Croll, Jewish M.P., who stated that “the existing policy was vague, inadequate and would bring only a trickle of immigrants.”
“We have not done enough to relieve the basic need or to salve our conscience as continuing demands from home and abroad would indicte,” he charged. “We are profoundly uneasy about immigration. We know we must adopt a positive plan, but we seem to do so reluctantly. Instead of formulating a broad clearly defined policy, we juggle around the regulations until even the immigration officials are as confused as the public.”
Expended immigration is urged by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics in a lengthy document released here. The report notes that the density of the Canadian population is 3.32 per square mile and contrasts this figure with those for the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom of 712.2, 711.1 and 507, respectively. The question of immigration looms large says the report, pointing out that the entrance into Canada of many young men from Europe anxious to make homes for themselves, could influence the birthrate favorably for some time.
