Three hundred displaced Jews who were allegedly attempting to cross from Germany into Austria on the first leg of a journey to Palestine were stopped by American constabulery troopers at Berchtesgaden, five miles from the frontier, and returened to the Puitpold trensient center, near here.
The group, the members of which are still being questioned by the Army, appeared disheartened. They are sticking to their story that they lost their way while seeking a DP center near Berchtesgaden. A high military source told the JTA that it was unlikely that disciplinary action would be taken against the DP’s, since they were stopped five miles inside the German border and technically had violated no regulations. They will probably be kept at Puitpold for a few days and then returned to the camps from which they came.
The military authorities, however, take a more serious view of where the DP’s obtained the seven trucks in which they were travelling. Five bore UNRRA markings, including several allegedly belonging to the Jewish Agency. The investigation of their origin is still continuing.
