As a “nation of immigrants” built by the contributions of immigrants of all countries and faiths, the United States has a special responsibility to maintain its historic policy of affording sanctuary to the oppressed former Gov. Herbert H. Lehman of New York today told a luncheon meeting of the ##ston Chapter of the American Jewish Committee in the Parker House.
He urged enactment in Congress of H.R. 2910 which would authorize immigration of 100,000 displaced persons a year for four years, and said he “hoped and ##rayed” for its passage. Said Governor Lehman: “Those admitted would be of many diferent nationalities and all religious faiths. The bill would take care of less than ##alf of the unhappy people in the displaced persons’ camps. It would, however, receive the situation immeasurably.”
