French military authorities yesterday halted and turned back some 600 displaced Jews from the American zone of Austria who were en route to Italy, it was reported here today.
The Jews, who were allegedly making their way to a port in the hope of reaching Palestine, barricaded themselves in a transit camp at Gnadenwald, near Innsbruck, when the French military police ordered them to retrace their steps. According to the report, the French took “energetic measures” in getting the Jews out of the camp and aboard a guarded train which returned them to the U.S. zone.
