The United States should take the lead in offering sanctuary to the displaced persons of Europe, Secretary of State George C. ?arshall said in a statement released today by the State Department.
The statement was made to representatives of several refugee aid groups who ?alled at the Department a few days ago to discuss the displaced persons problem, and, especially, reports that some refugees were being forcefully repatriated to their countries of origin.
“It is my opinion that the solution for this tragic situation demands that the democratic countries of the world join in offering sanctuary to these displaced individuals,” Marhsall said. “Further, it is my opinion that the United States should ?ake the lead in this matter.”
The delegation that called on Marshall included representatives of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America, the National Catholic Welfare Conference, the American Friends Service Committee, the American Federation of Labor, the Congress of Industrial Organizations, the Refugees Defense Committee and the International Rescue and Relief Committee.
