Urging immediate assistance to the tens of thousands of Jewish DP’s in Europe as a means of strengthening this country’s democracy, Attorney-General Tom Clark, who recently completed a tour of Europe, said that Displaced Persons should be classified as “hardy people who have withstood hardships” such as those who helped in the early development of the United States.
Speaking at a United Jewish Appeal luncheon here, Mr. Clark, stressing the importance of attaining the U.J.A. goal of $170,000,000 this year, declared that “the one and a half million surviving Jews symbolize the whole fight for freedom” and that “unless we do something to help these people, unless the governments of the world do help in this great crusade, our children and their children will suffer later on by reason of our neglect.”
Reiterating his previously-announced support of the Stratton bill, and urging that at least 100,000 DP’s be admitted to the United States, the Attorney-General said: “I don’t believe the entrance of these people would have even a ripple of effect upon our economy. In this day of great emergency, we must be realistic, we must do our share, as General Marshall says, in seeing to it that these people are taken care of.”
