Basle (Sep. 1)
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, addressing a meeting here to mark the 50th anniversary of the Zionist movement, told a cheering audience that he hoped that the UNSCOP would be the last commission to investigate the Palestine situation, “because we have stated repeatedly what we wanted.”
Thanking the Swiss authorities for their continued friendliness to Zionist aspirations and Swiss Jewry for the honor accorded him in inviting him to speak, Weizmann traced the history of the movement from the time of the publication of Herzl’s “Judenstaat” up to the current concern of the Jews throughout the world for the Exodus refugees.
The meeting hall was decorated with Zionist flags and a huge picture of Theodor Herzl hung over the rostrum. Attending the meeting were several veterans of the first Zionist Congress and a group of members of the Zionist Actions Committee, who came here by special train from Zurich.
