Congressman Emanuel Celler (Dem., N.Y.) today cabled an appeal to Pandit Nehru, Prime Minister of India, urging that the 280 Afghan Jews who have been ordered to leave India by Sept. 24 be allowed to remain in the country temporarily.
Pointing out that Sept. 24 falls on Yom Kippur and that the UNSCOP report on Palestine may soon make it possible for these Jews to go to Palestine, Celler asked that “the new Government of India extend the ultimatum in the true spirit of humanity.”
