President Truman’s message to Congress yesterday recommending extensions of Federal and state civil rights laws, was lauded today by Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, president of the American Jewish Committee, in a telegram sent to Truman.
Pointing out that “for 41 years the American Jewish Committee has conducted carefully organized campaigns to combat prejudice, in cooperation with other American groups,” Judge Proskauer declared that the President’s ten-point program “is as clearly a challenge to totalitarianism as were the four freedoms six years ago.” He pledged the “unreserved endorsement and support” of the American Jewish Commit-tee to every Federal, state and local program dedicated to guaranteeing fair employment practices, non-discrimination and non-segregation, safety of person and equal protection under the law, as enunciated by the President.
Justice Meir Steinbrink, chairman of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League, sent the President a telegram congratulating him on the “forthright action” he had taken to safeguard the “American principle of equality of right and opportunity.” The message added that the President’s special message stated the “case of all American dedicated to maintaining our nation as a dynamic democracy.”
