The maintenance of “cultural and spiritual values” in Palestine is necessary to the defense of the Jewish community there, it was stressed yesterday at a press conference arranged by the American Fund for Palestinian Institutions at which a group of Palestinian social welfare and cultural leaders participated.
Edward A. Norman, president of the American Fond, pointed out that the organization supports 89 secular and religious, cultural, educational and social welfare institutions in Palestine. “We are helping to sustain the morale and strengthen the confidence of the Jewish community in Palestine–to grow in power and to achieve a full and peaceful life for themselves, their children and the terror-stricken refugees whom they welcome into their lives,” he said.
Among the Palestinian leaders at the news conference were Henry Haftel, concert master of the Palestine Philharmonic Orchestra; Dr. Alexander Rosenfeld, general secretary of the Hebrew World Union; Dr. Ellen Simon, associate director of the Ezrath Nashim Hospital; Moshe Pomrok, of the Palestine Maritime League; Dr. Raphael Patai, director of the Institute of Folklore and Ethnology to Palestine and Jedidiah Gorochov, president of the Palestine Composers and Authors Association.
