4.000 Jews in Vienna Mark Establishment of Israel by March to Dr. Herzl’s Grave

Nearly 4,000 Jews including a large contingent of DP’s today marched through the streets of Vienna to the grave of Theodor Herzl, founder of modern Zionism, in the largest public demonstration by Jews since the liberation. The ceremony marked the establishment of the state of Israel.

The parade was headed by leaders of the Vienna Jewish Community, various Zionist organizations, and representatives of the Jewish Agency and the World Jewish Congress. At the Doebling Cemetery, where Herzl’s remains are buried, the Jews filed silently past the grave which was guarded by uniformed Jewish youths. In the, parade the marchers carried Zionist flags and posters with slogans in Hebrew.
