South Africa Recognizes Israel; Becomes First British Commonwealth Government to Act

The government of South Africa today recognized the Government of Israel, it was officially announced here.

Prime Minister Jan Christian Smuts, life-long friend of Zionism, telegraphed his government’s decision to Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok. South Africa is the first British Commonwealth to recognize the provisional Government in Tel Aviv.
