The decision to consider changes in the Displaced Persons Act to eliminate discriminatory features a was taken by Senator Chapman Reverend and his subcommittee on displaced persons despite a last minute appeal by 21 national organizations for action during the Special Session of Congress.
The American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress, the Jewish War Veterans, the National Council of Jewish Women and the National Jewish Welfare Board were among the signers of a wire that went to Revercomb Sentators Robert A. Taft and Alexander Wiley chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Governor Dewey.
Meanwhile, it was reported here over the week-end that the transportation of the 205,000 DP’s to the U.S. under the terms of the present legislation will be facilitated by a fleet of 25 U.S. vessels which have been assigned to bring refugee immigrants to this country.
