The Israeli Government today protested to U.N. liaison officer John Reedman over the Egyptian Government’s confiscation of 140 cases of clothing and shoes contributed by the South African Jewish community to the Joint Distribution Committee for now immigrants to Israel. The shipment was seized from the vessel Clipfontein which was passing through the Suez Canal.
A government spokesman revealed today that the Arab community in Israel is receiving the same food rations as Israelis. He noted that the Arabs are being given more flour than the Jews since they consume more bread. In Nazareth, the spokesman disclosed, the resumption of industrial activity has already begun under the direction of the Israeli military governor and 100 Arabs are employed by the Israeli department of public works in that town.
Half of the supply of water left for the Nazareth population by the British was used up when the Israelis took over the town and the supply had become dangerously low. The Jewish military governor arranged for bringing in water through an Israeli water company and the population’s supply is now sufficient. The spokesman also announced that the Israeli Government is planning to take a census of Jaffa.
