U.N. headquarters in Haifa today issued a strongly-worded warning to both Jews and Arabs to halt the fighting on the southern front immediately. The warning termed the large-scale Egyptian attack in the Negev yesterday a “flagrant and grave violation of the truce.”
Arab Legion artillery units today shelled Israeli positions west of the Ramallah-Latrun road. No new developments were reported in the Negev today following yesterday’s heaviest assault on Jewish settlements in that area since the truce began. Several Jewish colonies were subjected to intensive Egyptian aerial bombing. An Israeli military spokesman, although declining to say whether the Egyptian attack heralded a general offensive, said the Israeli Army is prepared for any eventuality.
Top U.N. truce officials, led by Chief of Staff Gen. W. Riley, arrived here today for urgent consultations with Israeli officials.
