The pro-Peron Jewish organization, “organization Israelita Argentina,” launched a drive to increase its membership. Advertisements in the Yiddish newspapers here called on Argentine Jews to enroll in the group “in order to stimulate us to support the work of our leader, Gen. Peron.” The ads also drew attention to the Argentine President’s statement of last Aug. 20 in which he pledged that anti-Semitism would not be allowed in Argentina during his tenure in office.

The O.I.A. today sent a message of thanks to President Peron for his speedy intervention in the arrest of 97 Jewish youths on Yom Kippur eve. The youths, following a custom in force here for several years, were strolling near the Presidential residence when they were mistaken for a group of demonstrators by the police and were seized and brought to prison. As soon as Peron was informed by Jewish organizations of the arrest, he ordered the youths released. Police officials apologized profusely to the youths for the incident, asking that they be “forgiven” in the spirit of the Day of Atonement.
