The deportation to Germany of four Jewish displaced persons because of illegal entry into Canada was revealed here today by Rabbi Abraham L. Feinberg, of this city, who charged that the deportees were being returned to “a living death in Germany.”
At the same time, the spiritual leader of Holy Blossom Temple here disclosed, a group of four Frenchmen wanted by the French Government on charges of wartime collaboration, who also entered Canada illegally, have been permitted to remain in Quebec following passage of a special ruling by the Federal Cabinet.
“The report that known Nazi collaborators are being admitted to Canada is a shocking reminder that the mentality which reduced the sentence of Ilse Koch to four years is not confined to American brass hats,” Rabbi Feinberg asserted.
Commenting on the incident, the Montreal Daily Herald said: “The Jewish refugees, poor wretches, have been sent back whence they came–to the land wherein they were tortured. But these other four–the Vichyites–whose manner of entry is not consonant with our law, are permitted to remain, possibly to be honored with Canadian citizenship after residential requirements have been met.” The newspaper asked the government to explain why it “found it expedient” to give refuge to the Frenchmen.
