A sudden renewal of Egyptian military activity in the Negev was revealed in an official communique issued here today. “Egyptian artillery shelled the settlements of Imara and Mivtachim, east of Rafa, and badly damaged the Israeli water pipeline linking the Negev settlements,” the announcement said.
“In the past few days, Egyptian infantry had made deep inroads in the Negev, taking positions in Tel Efarah, Tel Ejamma, Khirbet Kutshan and others,” the communique added. “The Israeli Army takes an extremely serious view of the matter, and although no Israeli action has as yet been taken, a protest was lodged today with the United Nations.”
It was reported here today that the Gath settlement, near the Falujja pocket, was heavily shelled by the Egyptians. An Egyptian soldier who escaped to Israeli lines today said that the Egyptian troops besieged in the Falujja area have enough supplies on hand for four days.
