The Security Council membership committee today referred the Israeli application for membership in the United Nations to the full Council, on a motion by Canada.
The Canadian delegate insisted that since the fate of the Palestine resolution is in doubt in the General Assembly his government is reluctant to vote on the application. France took the same line of reasoning, as did the United States. The Soviet delegate charged that the delay was a pretext for blocking the application.
Israeli circles later indicated that they still believed that it was possible for the Jewish state’s application to be passed on at this session, despite the delay.
During the course of the debate in the committees, the Argentine delegate revealed that he would vote for admission of Israel. This brought the known Council supporters of the Israeli application to five, with a minimum vote of seven votes needed for approval. The other four are the United States, the U.S.S.R., the Ukraine and Colombia, although the last has not yet made a public statement on the issue. The Jews are looking to Canada and France for the other two affirmative votes.
