The Israeli State Council tonight decided to introduce compulsory registration of ail residents of Israel over the age of 16. This still also include all new immigrants who will have to register within 30 days of their arrival. That measure was demanded by Dr. Itzhak Gruenbaum, Minister of Interior, who said that it is necessary not only for government records, but also to assist Jews abroad who are searching for relatives.
The leaders of the left-wing Mepam and right-wing Revisionist Party were scheduled to hold separate meetings tonight to discuss the attitudes of their respective parties toward the proposed coalition government to be headed by Premier David Ben Gurion.
The central committee of the Mapam will decide whether to enter the coalition and if so, on what basis. It is believed hare, however, that no final decision will be reached on this matter until after the general elections within the Histadruth, which are slated for February 15.
The Palestine Council of the Revisionists, besides considering the make-up of the government, will also decide whether to merge with the Heruth, Irgun-sponsored party which placed fourth in the recent national elections. Problems concerning the Israeli party’s relationship to the world Revisionist organization will also be discussed. It is considered likely that a merged Revisionist-Heruth party will become the Israeli branch of the world Revisionist movement.
It was reported today that the Mapai has decided to retain five Cabinet posts for itself, rather than the four which it holds air present. It is understood that could Meyerson will return from Moscow, where she is the Israeli Minister, to assume a post in the Cabinet.
