President Weizmann Sends Congratulations to Judge Rothenberg on Election to U.p.a. Post

Characterizing 1949 as “a momentous year” for the Jews of Israel as well as for the thousands of homeless Jews still in the DP camps of Europe, President Chaim Weizmann of Israel yesterday expressed his “deep appreciation” over the election of Judge Morris Rothenberg as acting national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal and a national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal a U. P. A. announcement revealed today.

In a cable to Judge Rothenberg, Dr. Weizmann voiced confidence that American Jewry will rally behind you in providing necessary funds for the reception and absorption of hundreds of thousands now pouring into our new state.” The Israeli President added that “the people of Israel are enheartened to know that they will save our devoted services in this momentous year.” Other congratulatory messages were also received from Israeli Premier David Ben Gurion; Eliezer Kaplan, Finance Minister; Leo Herrmann, Secretary-general of the Palestine Foundation Fund in Jeursalems Berl LocKer, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive in Jerusalem; Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, and numerous other Jewish leaders.
