LONDON (Apr. 7)
Dr. Mordecat Eliash, Israeli Minister to the United Kingdom, paid his first official call today at the British Foreign Office. He was accompanied by I.J. Linton, recently-appointed counsellor of the Israeli Legation.
Dr. Eliash presented his credentials to Foreign Undersecretary Christopher Mayhew9 who expressed regret that Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin was absent in the U.S. Mayhew and Sliash exchanged friendly greetings and expressed hope that relations between the two countries would be fruitful. After the formalities, a general discussion followed in which it was agreed that one or two financial problems would require discussion in the near future.
Dr. Eliash told Mayhew that a “messianic spirit” animated the people of Israel today and pointed out how that Jewish communities in various parts of the world were on the move to the Jewish state. He was later introduced to Michael Wright, permanent Undersecretary for Middle Eastern Affairs, and to Sir William Strang, permanent head of the Foreign Office staff.
