The armistice meeting between Israel and Syria, scheduled for today at Mahamaim, on the frontier between the two countries, was called off when the Syrians refused to resume negotiations, according to a communique issued here.
Meanwhile, an Israeli delegation has accepted an invitation by Brig. Gen. William E. Riley, chief of staff of the United Nations mediator, to meet in Jerusalem on Wednesday next to consider a new proposal from Dr. Ralph Bunche, U.N. acting mediator, forwarded from Lake Success, it was learned unofficially. The Bunche project, it was said, provides for the demilitarization of the disputed area in Jerusalem. Gen, Riley, it is hoped here, will also be able to solve the Arab-Israeli dispute over the Government House area favorably to both sides.
The decrease in the infiltration of Arabs into Israel from the north is due to the increased control by Lebanese security patrols, according to a report made last sight at a meeting of the mixed armistice committee, held at Metullah.
