The American Jewish Committee today recorded its endorsement of the “Civil Rights Act of 1949,” sponsored in the Senate by Sen. J. Howard McGrath and in the House by Rep, Emanuel Celler.
The Committee’s statement was sent to the Senate subcommittee concerned with the omnibus of Civil Rights bills. The Committee stated: “We believe that segregation imposes a badge of inferiority just as clearly as did the infamous Nuremberg laws of the Nazi regime.”
Rep. Celler said today, following a talk with President Truman, that he believes the administration’s omnibus of Civil Rights bills will pass the House at this session. Mr. Celler said he did not discuss the Israeli situation with the President.
